lokmat hindi crime story: Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli is a notorious gangster who joined the Mumbai underworld in the 1970s. He, however, came under the limelight only during the late ’80s. His notoriety continued until the late ’90s. Gawli’s life was adapted into a movie with the Arjun Rampal-starrer Daddy. Known famously as the ‘Daddy’ of Dagdi Chawl, an erstwhile neighbourhood that functioned as the headquarters of Gawli’s gang, Arun Gawli was a sworn rival of Dawood Ibrahim.Gawli went on to float a political party and he even became a legislator in the Maharashtra assembly in 2004. Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray once even referred to Hindu gangsters like Gawli as “aamchi muley” (our boys). However, in the early ’90s Gawli had a falling out with the Shiv Sena. Arun Gawli as convicted in 2012 for the murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamalakar Jamsandekar, who was shot dead at his residence in 2007.
